LAKE ELMO - In creating a stone memorial truly worthy of the veterans it honors, Eagle Scout Kevin Schwarz has ensured he will be remembered, as well. Dozens of family, friends, local officials and veterans gathered at the VFW ballfield in Lake Elmo Tuesday afternoon to celebrate completion of the project, which put a flagpole and stone monument along Layton Avenue, just beyond the centerfield fence. Schwarz, a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 224, has been working on the project since April. After 10 months of planning and four weeks spent moving 96 tons of stone and dirt he said he is pleased with the result. "I wanted to do it right. I wanted to make it vandal-proof, which is why I used the stone, and I wanted it to be here for a long time," the 17-year-old Lake Elmo resident said Tuesday. "I'm very happy with how it turned out. I can't wait to see it in the spring; it should look beautiful with all the plants." Addressing the small crowd that braved the icy wind to witness the first raising of the American flag at the memorial, Schwarz thanked community members for their support. "I couldn't have done it without you," he said. "This is not just something that I've created, it's something that the community has created to honor these veterans. And I think it's great for us to commemorate them, because they've done more for us than we can imagine." So far, donations have covered all but $600 of the project's $9,000 construction cost. Al Mitchell, commander of Lake Elmo VFW Post 5725, took the opportunity to thank Schwarz for all he had done. "We are honored that this is taking place," he said. "I can't tell you how much it pleases me, and on behalf of the veterans of Washing æton County - and veterans everywhere - I would like to thank you, Kevin." Longtime Lake Elmo VFW member and past Commander Bob Johnson said he, too, was honored and impressed by the project. "I think it's wonderful. I'm very proud of Kevin; I think he did a gorgeous job with it," he said. Though Schwarz decided early on that he wanted the memorial to be substantial, the Stillwater Area High School senior said he had no idea how much it would grow in scope and complexity when he started planning it in April. His mother, Mary Schwarz, said she wasn't surprised by the project's evolution or her son's commitment to it, however. "That's just the kind of kid he is," she said. "He's very ambitious, and he'll always go the extra mile. å I'm so proud of him." Partly as a result of his service project - which is required to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts' highest honor - Schwarz will represent Washington County in a statewide Eagle Scout competition to determine who will go on to represent Minnesota at the national level. Looking back on the project, Schwarz said he learned a lot from his work on the veterans memorial. "I found out that everything's going to take longer than you expect it to take. Nothing's ever as simple as it seems, and it's always going to take hard work to get it done," he said. "But it's not about how many hours it takes to get a job done; it's about getting the job done and doing in right. That's what I tried to do here."
